Exterior repaints in Tauranga

If you’re thinking about repainting the outside of your home, you’ll deal with me the whole way through. I walk the house, I write the price, and I’m on the tools from the wash to the final coat.

That matters on an exterior, because the Bay of Plenty is hard on paint. You’ve got sun hammering the north face all summer, salt in the air anywhere near the harbour or the coast, and damp sitting on the shaded side right through winter. Do an exterior properly and it’ll give you ten years or more. Rush it and you’ll watch it peel inside of two. That’s why the prep gets most of my time, and colour only goes on once it’s done.

What's included

  • I walk the house myself and give you a fixed written price by elevation
  • A full house wash, then scraping, sanding, filling and spot-priming
  • Two coats of exterior Dulux, Resene or Aalto
  • Windows, doors, fascia, soffits and downpipes all in the price
  • Minor timber repairs to fascia and board ends where they're needed
  • A walk round the finished house together

The claddings I work with

Painted weatherboard, cedar and stained timber, textured and plaster finishes, Shadowclad and the other sheet claddings, fibre cement, and all the trim, fascia and soffits that go around them. A recent one at Mount Maunganui had a bit of everything: fascia repairs, a stain on the exposed rafters, and a colour change across the textured walls, all on the same house.

Changing colour, or coming off a stain

Going from a stained cedar look to a painted finish, or from something light to something properly dark, changes both the prep and the number of coats it’ll take to get there. I’ll tell you honestly what your boards can handle when I’m standing in front of them, rather than promise you a result they won’t hold.

Getting the timing right

Exterior paint needs dry surfaces and reasonable temperatures to cure properly, so most of my exteriors run somewhere between spring and autumn. I plan them so the whole house is finished in one go rather than dragging on for a month, which means the ones I take on are the two-to-three-week jobs. If yours doesn’t suit the season, I’ll say so at the quote instead of starting something the weather won’t let me finish.

Before and after

Hot Springs Road, Katikati, is my most recent full exterior. Same house, same angles, before and after.

How an exterior repaint runs

  1. I come and look

We walk round the house together so I can check the boards, fascia and joinery, see what the old paint is doing, and talk through colours.

  2. You get a fixed price

A clear written quote within 24 hours, split by elevation. If a wall or the soffits are still sound, I'll leave them out and say so.

  3. We prepare properly

A full wash, then scraping, sanding, filling and priming, with any soft fascia or board ends repaired before paint goes on.

  4. Paint, then walk round

Two coats, sprayed or brushed to suit each surface. I clean up, then we walk round the house together before I call it finished.

Exterior repaints: common questions

How much does it cost to paint the outside of a house in Tauranga?

The size of the house, how many storeys it is, what the cladding is and how much prep the old paint needs are what really move the price. I'll come and look, then send a fixed written price split by elevation, so you can see exactly where the cost is sitting rather than staring at one big number.

Do you paint cedar and stained weatherboards?

Yes, they come up regularly. I've done cedar restains and colour changes over stained boards, including a bach and garage out at Athenree and a weatherboard exterior at Kauri Point. Stain and paint want completely different prep, so your quote will spell out which one you're getting and why.

Can you just paint over the old paint?

Not if it's peeling, chalking or cracked, no. Paint only lasts as long as whatever is underneath it, so anything that's failed gets scraped back, sanded and primed first. If the old coat is sound and it's only had a wash and a light sand, then yes, we can go straight over it.

Do you paint roofs, fences or decks?

No, and I'd rather say so now than waste your time. I stick to the house itself: the cladding, fascia, soffits, windows and doors. Roofs, fences, decks and pergolas aren't work I take on, so you'll want a specialist for those.
